Athletics: Track and field is flying

THE TRACK and Field season is well and truly underway as the Kilkenny County Championships began in Scanlon Park last weekend.  

Competitions were preceded by a number of meetings, warm-up events for athletes, starting with St Senan’s Open Sports on Easter Monday and followed on May Bank Holiday Monday by St Abbans Open Sports.

In Kilmacow at Easter Aisling Phelan was third in the 100m sprint. 

Alex Daly, Fionn Meagher and Roisin Holohan also competed. On the May Bank Holiday at the St Abbans Open Sports Aisling Phelan was second in 100m sprint. 

James Bourne, Daniel Bourne, Eva Madden and Rionach Young also competed. 

Meanwhile James Kelly finished third in the Leinster Road Masters Over 35 in Gowran on April 29.

Remaining with James Kelly, he was silver medallist in the County Senior 1500m, a race in which James set the pace and led until the late stages when overtaken in a very exciting finish. 

Castlecomer had two medallists at U18, Emma Lawlor over 800m and Sophia Kerr over 200m.  

Girls’ Under 17 300m Hurdles silver medal winner was Eimear Phelan.  In boys’ U16 100m Adam Lynch won silver and Stephen O’Dwyer won bronze. 

In U16 400m, Adam won gold and Stephen captured silver. U14 800m bronze medallist was Laura Gamble while Aisling Phelan won 200m U13 silver.

While these were the medallists, there were a number of other athletes who competed and impressed. 

At U12 Eilish Bollard qualified for the 200m final and finished fourth; Daniel Bourne was fourth in the U13 80m final; Daniel Bourne and Cillian Brennan competed over 500m, Mairead Ring competed in Turbo Javelin and over 200m.

Roisin Holohan competed in Long Jump and 200m race as also did Aisling and Ellen Comerford. Jack Gamble was a finalist over 80m at U12, an event in which Tommy Hickey also competed. 

For U13 Boys (Daniel Bourne, Cillian Brennan, Tommy Hickey and Jack Gamble) there was a very good relay performance which yielded a fourth place.

The County Championships continue as follows:  Athletes U8, 9 and 10, May 18 and 25; Athletes U11, 19 Sunday May 22 and Friday May 27. Seniors, Friday, June 10.
