Ruth Butler: Warm, Friendly, Courteous

by Jimmy Rhatigan

Like her husband Richard, Ruth Butler who has passed away was among the great heroes of the hotel business in Kilkenny for a wonderful era.
A devoted couple, Ruth and Richard took real pride in an industry they loved and won admiration for their huge contribution to tourism as hotel ambassadors and leaders in Kilkenny City.
Ruth, a member of the Wood family, was a brilliant co-ordinator who had excellent knowledge of so many aspects that make hotels tick.
Her warm, friendly and courteous manner endeared her to guests and staff alike.
In more recent years, Ruth devoted herself unselfishly to KASA, formerly the Kilkenny Rape Crisis Centre where, along with dedicated colleagues, she was committed to a cause in which she had a firm belief.
The couple lived at Oak Road, Dukesmeadows, Kilkenny City. Ruth died after a short illness.
She was predeceased by her parents Kathleen and Andy; brother Duncan and parents-in-law Martin and Kit.
She is survived by her husband Richard; son Martin; daughters Kate, Fiona and Anne; daughter-in-law Johanna; sons-in-law David, Shane and Julian; grandchildren Emma, Andrew, Matthew, James, Ben and Aoife; cousin Ed, Scotland; brother-in-law Gus; sisters-in-law Mary O and Mame; nephews and nieces in Scotland and Ireland and work colleagues in KASA.
