Son Of Kilkenny Dies In New York

by Edited by Jimmy Rhatigan

Paddy Lyons who has died in Yonkers, New York was originally from Kickham Street at the heart of Kilkenny City.
He had spent most of his life in his adopted USA but his heart remained in his beloved Kilkenny.
Paddy and his brother Dick, also a long time US resident, were very popular in their native city and loved the game of hurling, a love that they continued to spread as proud emigrants.
The boys’ parents, Paddy and Catherine were highly regarded and respected as great neighbours in Kickham Street, a stone’s throw from the local boys’ centres of education, Kilkenny CBS Primary and Secondary Schools.
Both loved to return home for family visits and were particularly enthusiastic when the Cats reached All-Ireland hurling finals.
Paddy was married to a Leitrim woman, Rose Shanley. The couple had just celebrated 57 years of happy marriage.
A talented entertainer, Paddy was a first class singer and musician and at another time was a member of the New York Irish showband, The hi-Spots.
He had retired from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Wall street where he was a respected and much loved staff member for a quarter of a century.
He will be sadly missed by his loving family and many great friends.
