by Jimmy Rhatigan

A YOUNG fighter from Callan Boxing Club who won a Leinster title last year is on the cusp of another possible crown following a weekend win.

Twelve year old Lee Walsh of Garryricken, Windgap, a pupil of Callan CBS had a great win over local battler Kevin Moorhouse in the Leinster Championships in Enniscorthy on Saturday.

Lee was in great form, really impressing the judges and getting the thumbs up from four out of five of them.

His bout was in 38kg and he now contests the semi-final, again in Wexford on Saturday next.

In his corner was coach John Hickey who along with club head coach Jimmy Walsh and Lee’s dad, Stephen works hard for the underage pugilists of Callan and surrounds.

Jimmy Walsh described Lee as a talented young boxer who can go on to further success. The Callan club now concentrates predominantly on younger boys and girls who are new to the sport.

Lee has been a member of the club for two years, with his sister Abby who won a Leinster Championship last year. Abby and Lee’s parents are Sinead and Stephen Walsh.
