Kilkenny minor hurling Cats put their nine lives on the line as they took on Galway in the 2020 All-Ireland final.
Richie Mulrooney’s young guns failed to come out blazing and it was the Tribes that surged ahead with a string of points.
Slowly but surely the stripy boys got into their stride, started to bite into the Galway lead and finally edged in front with the aid of a well struck penalty.
The great recovery looked set to bring a fairytale finish for the black and amber braves but then came a late, late killer blow when Galway goaled and the carpet of possible success was swiped from under the feet of our local warriors.
The epilogue was a battle against the clock.
Father Time dealt the youngsters a harsh lesson as the referee whistled for the end of a game that had entertained and enthralled but ultimately proved a disappointment for a gallant Kilkenny.
That a good start is half the work is a proverb that kpoerhaps sums up minor final day for Kilkenny in Portlaoise.
